Personal Statement Overview

To apply for UK universities, you’ll need to write a personal statement as part of your UCAS application to five universities of your choice. Typically 650–800 words, it should highlight:

  • Your motivation for studying your chosen course

  • Passions outside the classroom

  • Ambitions after university

  • Extracurricular activities that shaped valuable skills

⚠️ Remember: all five universities see the same statement, so keep it course-specific rather than tailoring it to an individual institution.

Beyond grades and teacher recommendations, the personal statement is your chance to show your authentic self and stand out to admissions staff reading thousands of applications. Think of it as stepping onto a stage—or writing your own story. What would you say? Why does it matter?

On the UCAS portal, each response must be at least 350 characters, with a maximum 4,000 characters in total (about 650–800 words). How you distribute that word count across your answers is up to you, but we recommend to aim for 200–250 words per question to keep your answers balanced.

🗣️ Pro tip: Don’t write your draft in the UCAS portal - you should write it all together in a Google Doc to visualise it well and make the necessary changes.

Recent Changes Explained

We know that change can sometimes feel daunting. But here at EduNova, our goal is simple: to help you succeed at university. The truth? The new format is more of a structural tweak than a complete overhaul—and it’s designed to make your life easier.

Instead of writing one long essay, you are now required to answer three compulsory questions. This gives you clarity on what admissions staff are really looking for—and ensures your application covers the essentials.

The 3 Questions

1) Why do you want to study this course or subject?

  • Show your passion, interest, and motivation.

  • Explain what drew you to this course and why you’re a strong fit.

2) How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

  • Link your IB, A-Levels, or high school studies to your chosen course.

  • Highlight meaningful learning experiences and transferable skills.

3) What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

  • Think work experience, volunteering, or extracurriculars.

  • Show how these activities shaped you and strengthened your interest.

🗣️ Pro tip: Connect these experiences to the first question - highlight your motivation for studying this course, and why you are a perfect fit; it will make your application more memorable and personalised

Do’s and Dont’s Checklist

Do’s

✅ PLAN
Before you start writing, make a plan. Since each question requires an individual answer, planning ensures you don’t repeat yourself. For example: use Question 1 for a personal story to show your interest in the course, and Questions 2–3 for academic work or extracurriculars that highlight your skills and development.

✅ START EARLY
Writing a strong personal statement takes effort. From our own experience, it can take 3–4 drafts to get the balance right. Give yourself time to refine your word count, spelling, grammar, and coverage.

✅ USE AI WISELY
AI can be great for brainstorming and tightening your writing, but admissions officers are trained to spot AI-heavy work. Use it for ideas, grammar, or reducing word count—not to write your answers.

✅ GET FEEDBACK
Ask for feedback from friends, family, or supervisors. Fresh eyes will help you refine your answers and build confidence in your application.

Dont’s

❌ COPY previous examples
Examples can inspire, but originality is essential. Universities value fresh, personal perspectives.

❌ OVERUSE quotes
A relevant quote can support your point, but overdoing it makes your statement repetitive and less personal.

❌ INCLUDE everything
Don’t try to cram in every achievement. Be selective and deliberate about what experiences matter most and how they connect to your course. Cohesion and focus will be rewarded.
